At Azra AI, we honor individuals whose leadership and compassion help transform cancer care. This month, we are proud to recognize Mimi Taylor, Principal at ECG Management Consultants, as our Oncology Hero. With more than three decades of experience, Mimi has shaped healthcare IT, championed innovation, and inspired countless professionals along the way.
A Career of Impact
Before joining ECG Management Consultants, Mimi spent over 30 years at Baptist Health South Florida, including 28 years as Chief Information Officer. In her tenure, she oversaw critical technology initiatives, operational improvements, and strategic projects that spanned mergers and acquisitions. Yet, among her many accomplishments, one stands out as particularly meaningful: helping bring the Miami Cancer Institute to life.
“I think one of the greatest things that I ever experienced at Baptist was being able to be part of the development, opening and support of the Miami Cancer Institute,” she shares.
An Unexpected Path
One might not realize it from looking at her resume, but Mimi’s journey into healthcare IT wasn’t planned. Her original aspirations were actually quite far from the healthcare realm.
“My passion going off to school was actually in languages… I thought I wanted to be in the CIA and be an ambassador” She shares. It wasn’t until Mimi’s sophomore year in college during an internship at Coopers and Lybrand when she started to consider alternate career paths. “A very nice person pulled me over and said, ‘hey, would you like to learn something about computer accounting?’… I said, ‘oh, that sounds pretty cool. I'll do that!’”
That pivot introduced her to the emerging possibilities of technology and ultimately led her to healthcare consulting. It was during that time in which Mimi discovered a true passion for leveraging technology to improve care delivery.
What Drives Mimi Taylor
Mimi’s passion for healthcare is deeply personal. Her parents instilled in her the importance of pursuing work with heart and determination.
“My parents...taught me at a very young age [that] if you have a passion for something, go after it, [and] do it with all of your heart and soul.”
That sense of purpose was further shaped by her father’s battle with cancer. Witnessing his resilience and commitment to doing the right things left a lasting impression on Mimi, fueling her dedication to improving care for others.
“My father had a number of bouts with cancer...he never gave up and always focused on doing the right things. And so I think about that,” she reflects. “I'm just a very energetic person that likes to help other people.”
Lessons for CIOs
With nearly three decades of experience as a CIO, Mimi stresses the importance of thoughtful technology adoption. Too often, she would witness organizations implementing solutions without fully understanding underlying workflows or the root causes of problems.
“If businesses identify a problem… many times it seems to be easier for that organization to just kind of throw a technology solution out there,” Mimi says. “But have we looked at the workflows? Do we understand the root cause of the problems?… Technology implementation is a journey that never ends, that requires constant sustainability.”
