At Azra AI, we are thrilled to shine a spotlight on extraordinary leaders in oncology who embody dedication, passion, and excellence. This month, we are proud to recognize Cheryl Sheridan, the Director of Oncology Data and Accreditation at HCA Healthcare Sarah Cannon Cancer Network, as our Oncology Hero of the Month.
A Career-long Impact
With 41 years of experience in oncology data management, Cheryl’s career stands as a testament to her commitment to improving cancer care. Cheryl’s journey into oncology wasn’t planned — it began when she was introduced to a retiring professional in the field who saw her potential. Inspired by the opportunity to make a meaningful difference, Cheryl became certified in 1984, marking the start of a remarkable career that would touch thousands of lives.
"You have to be passionate about it," Cheryl shared. "What we do is follow a patient's journey, and the data we collect is vital to the future of cancer strategy, development, and treatments."
A Vital but Often Overlooked Profession
Cheryl is part of a unique and often underrecognized profession. As an Oncology Data Specialist, a title that recently evolved from "Cancer Registrar" or "Certified Tumor Registrar", her work ensures that each patient’s diagnosis, treatment, and lifetime outcomes are captured accurately. These data points serve not just the individual healthcare facility, but also contribute to state registries and the national cancer database, helping to shape future oncology strategies and treatments across the country.
Leadership on a National Stage
Beyond her impactful work at HCA Healthcare, Cheryl is also a leader on the national stage. She currently serves as the Program Chair for the 2025 National Cancer Registrar’s Association (NCRA) Annual Conference in Orlando, Florida. Her history of volunteerism and leadership within both national and regional organizations highlights her deep commitment to advancing education, innovation, and professional growth within the oncology community.
Embracing Change and Technology
Throughout her career, Cheryl has witnessed — and embraced — dramatic shifts in technology. From the days of paper abstracts and tickler systems to today's automated data systems and AI-driven processes, she has remained at the forefront of innovation, ensuring that data collection evolves alongside patient care.
Leading with Compassion and Connection
Leading a large, remote team across multiple hospitals, Cheryl prioritizes engagement, communication, and well-being. She champions work-life balance, encourages team celebrations, and fosters a strong culture of connection despite the distance.
"Family first," Cheryl says. "And start your day dressed and ready, even when working from home. It sets the tone."
Cheryl’s leadership philosophy is rooted in compassion, strong listening skills, and constant communication — essential qualities for managing complex work in oncology while maintaining a connected, motivated team.
A Legacy of Passion and Excellence
Cheryl’s incredible career and unwavering passion remind us all of the vital importance of oncology data specialists — a profession that, for far too long, worked behind the scenes without due recognition. Thanks to leaders like Cheryl, the future of cancer care is brighter, smarter, and more patient-centered.
We are honored to recognize Cheryl Sheridan as our April 2025 Oncology Hero of the Month. Congratulations, Cheryl, and thank you for all that you do!
